How the coffee ratio works

Coffee strength is generally described as a ratio of water to dry coffee grounds by weight. The Specialty Coffee Association’s commonly cited “Golden Ratio” is about 1:17 to 1:18 (1 gram of coffee for every 17-18 grams/ml of water), while stronger brews use less water per gram of coffee, around 1:15.

This calculator converts your chosen number of standard 8 fl oz cups into milliliters of water, then divides by your selected ratio to get the grams of ground coffee needed, plus an approximate tablespoon measure for convenience.

  • 1 cup here means 8 fluid ounces (about 236.6 ml), the standard brewing-cup convention used by most coffee makers — note this differs from a 12 fl oz “mug.”
  • 1 tablespoon of ground coffee is approximately 5.3 grams, though this varies by grind size and roast.

These are general brewing guidelines for home use; adjust to your personal taste and equipment.
