Why coffee ratios matter

A coffee-to-water ratio tells you how many grams of water to use per gram of ground coffee, and it’s the single biggest factor in how strong or weak your brewed coffee tastes. A 1:16 ratio (1 gram of coffee per 16 grams/ml of water) is a common starting point for drip machines, while French press and espresso use noticeably different ratios because of how those methods extract flavor.

How this calculator works

Enter your water amount and pick a brew method, and the calculator divides your water amount by the ratio to tell you exactly how many grams of coffee grounds to use, plus an approximate tablespoon measurement (roughly 5.3 grams of ground coffee per tablespoon).

Note: Personal taste varies, so feel free to adjust slightly stronger or weaker once you’ve found your preferred starting ratio. Grind size, water temperature, and brew time also affect the final taste.
