What this calculator does
The Words per Minute Calculator measures reading or typing speed. Enter the number of words involved and the time it took, and it calculates your speed in words per minute (WPM). If you’re measuring typing speed, you can also enter the number of errors made to get a more realistic net WPM.
How the calculation works
Gross WPM is calculated as the total word count divided by the total time in minutes. Net WPM, commonly used in typing tests, subtracts a penalty for mistakes: it takes the number of errors, divides that by the time in minutes as well, and subtracts it from the gross WPM, giving a lower but more accurate picture of effective typing speed.
This calculator is useful for tracking reading speed, practicing typing, or timing a speech or presentation. Results are for general self-assessment and practice purposes.
