What is winning percentage?

Winning percentage is a standard way to compare team records across a season, especially when teams have played a different number of games or have ties on their record. It expresses a team’s success rate as a single decimal value between 0 and 1.

How this calculator works

The basic formula is: Winning Percentage = Wins ÷ Total Games Played. When ties are involved, two common conventions exist. In sports like the NFL, a tie counts as half a win and half a loss, giving: (Wins + 0.5 × Ties) ÷ Total Games. In other contexts, ties are simply excluded and the percentage is based only on decided games (Wins ÷ (Wins + Losses)). Choose the option that matches your league’s convention.

A winning percentage of .500 represents an even record, while values above .500 indicate a winning record and values below indicate a losing one. This tool is for general reference and educational use in tracking team or league standings.
