How winches are sized
A winch needs enough pulling capacity to handle far more than a vehicle’s static weight, because recovery loads involve friction, mud suction, inclines, and sudden jerks that multiply the effective force needed.
The formula
The widely used rule of thumb is Minimum Winch Capacity = Fully Loaded Vehicle Weight × 1.5, with off-road or frequently muddy conditions often warranting a 2x multiplier for extra safety margin. This calculator also shows the reduced line-pull force needed if you use a snatch block (double-line pull), which roughly halves the load on the winch at the cost of pulling speed.
