What this calculator does

The Tree Value Calculator estimates a landscape tree’s monetary worth using the trunk formula method, a technique commonly referenced by arborists and tree appraisers for large, healthy shade and ornamental trees.

How the formula works

The calculator first finds the trunk’s cross-sectional area using Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)², then multiplies it by a base replacement cost per square inch to get an unadjusted base value. That base value is then scaled down by three percentage ratings — species desirability, condition (health and structure), and location (placement and contribution to the landscape) — multiplied together: value = base value × species% × condition% × location%.

  • A larger trunk diameter increases value quickly since area scales with the radius squared
  • Species, condition, and location ratings are typically assigned by a certified arborist during a physical inspection

A note on accuracy

This is a simplified educational version of the trunk formula method used in professional tree appraisal guides; a formal, insurance-grade, or legal tree appraisal should be performed by a certified arborist following an established appraisal standard.
