How to size a crate
A properly sized crate lets a dog stand up fully, turn around, and lie down stretched out, without being so large that it feels like an entire room (which can undermine housetraining). The standard rule is to measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, then add about 4 inches for comfortable room to move.
How this calculator works
Enter your dog’s body length and standing height. The calculator adds a few inches of buffer to each measurement, then matches the result to the nearest common commercially sold crate size (18, 22, 24, 30, 36, 42, or 48 inches).
If your dog is still growing, size for their expected adult dimensions, or use a crate with a divider panel that can be adjusted as they grow. This tool gives general guidance; check the specific interior dimensions of any crate you’re considering.
