How this calculator works

Chocolate is toxic to dogs mainly because of theobromine, a methylxanthine compound dogs metabolize much more slowly than humans do. This tool multiplies the amount of chocolate eaten by the typical theobromine content of that chocolate type, then divides by your dog’s body weight to get a dose in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg).

Widely cited veterinary references put mild signs (vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness) starting around 20 mg/kg, more serious cardiac effects around 40-50 mg/kg, and seizures possible above roughly 60 mg/kg. This calculator shows your estimated dose against the 20 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg reference points as percentages.

  • White chocolate contains only trace theobromine and is low risk from theobromine alone.
  • Baking chocolate and cocoa powder are far more concentrated than milk chocolate, gram for gram.

This tool is for general educational and planning purposes only and does not replace professional veterinary advice. If your dog has eaten chocolate, especially dark chocolate, baking chocolate, or cocoa powder, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control hotline right away rather than relying on this estimate alone.
