What stroke volume measures
Stroke volume is the amount of blood the heart’s left ventricle pumps out with each beat. Along with heart rate, it determines cardiac output — the total volume of blood the heart pumps per minute.
The formulas used
Stroke Volume (SV) = End-Diastolic Volume (EDV) – End-Systolic Volume (ESV). Ejection Fraction (EF) = SV / EDV x 100%, a common measure of how well the heart is pumping. Cardiac Output (CO) = SV x Heart Rate, typically expressed in liters per minute.
