Sneeze exit speed has been studied and estimated using high-speed video; commonly cited figures for an uncovered sneeze range from roughly 30-100 mph depending on the study and measurement method, which is why this calculator lets you enter your own starting estimate.
The formula
Effective Speed = Initial Speed × Covering Reduction Factor. Covering your sneeze reduces the speed and range of expelled droplets: a hand offers only partial blocking, an elbow or sleeve does somewhat better, and a well-fitted mask is the most effective at reducing outward droplet speed, based on commonly cited illustrative estimates from respiratory droplet research.
