What is Slugging Percentage?
Slugging Percentage (SLG) measures the total number of bases a hitter records per at bat, giving more weight to extra-base hits than a simple batting average does. It reflects a batter’s raw power and ability to hit for extra bases, not just how often they get a hit.
How SLG is calculated
Total bases are counted as 1 for a single, 2 for a double, 3 for a triple, and 4 for a home run. The formula is: SLG = Total Bases ÷ At Bats. Unlike batting average, walks and hit-by-pitches are not included in the calculation.
SLG is expressed as a decimal, such as .450, and can exceed 1.000 for exceptional stretches of power hitting. League-average SLG is typically around .400 to .420 at the professional level.
Comparing SLG to on-base percentage (often combined as OPS) gives a fuller picture of a hitter’s overall offensive contribution. This tool is for general reference and personal stat tracking.
