What is the Fitzpatrick scale?

The Fitzpatrick scale is a widely used classification system that groups skin into six types (I through VI) based on natural coloring and how the skin typically reacts to sun exposure, ranging from very fair skin that burns easily to deeply pigmented skin that rarely burns.

How this calculator works

You answer six quick questions about your natural eye color, hair color, unexposed skin tone, freckling, sunburn tendency, and tanning ability. Each answer is worth 0 to 4 points, and the points are added together for a total score out of 24. Lower totals correspond to fairer, more sun-sensitive skin (Type I-II), middle totals correspond to medium tones that tan gradually (Type III-IV), and higher totals correspond to darker skin that rarely or never burns (Type V-VI).

Fitzpatrick type is often used as a general guide for sun protection habits and for estimating tolerance to certain skin treatments, such as some laser or light-based procedures.

This is a simplified self-assessment for general educational purposes, not a clinical determination. Actual sun sensitivity can vary, and a dermatologist or qualified skincare professional should be consulted for decisions about sun exposure limits or skin procedures.
