What BMR measures

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs at complete rest just to maintain basic functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production. It is the foundation for estimating your total daily calorie needs.

How this calculator works

Enter your sex, age, height, weight, and typical activity level. The calculator uses the revised Harris-Benedict equation: for men, BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) − (5.677 × age); for women, BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) − (4.330 × age). It then multiplies your BMR by an activity factor (ranging from 1.2 for sedentary to 1.9 for very active) to estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), the calories you burn in an average day.
