What This Calculator Does

This tool adds up how many disposable plastic items (bottles, bags, cups, and straws) you currently use in a typical week, then projects the yearly total of items and approximate plastic weight you could avoid by switching to reusable alternatives like a refillable bottle, cloth tote bags, and a reusable cup.

How the Estimate Is Calculated

Item counts are simply scaled up: weekly items × 52 = yearly items avoided. Weight is estimated using typical average masses reported for these disposable products: roughly 12 grams for a single-use plastic water bottle, 5 grams for a thin plastic shopping bag, and 6 grams for a disposable cup or straw combined. These are general averages, since actual product weights vary by brand, size, and material thickness.

This calculator is meant for general educational and motivational planning purposes to help visualize the cumulative effect of everyday choices. It does not measure your actual household waste or account for recycling rates, which vary widely by location.
