Real versus artificial trees

A real Christmas tree has a small footprint if it is mulched or composted after the holidays (it absorbed roughly as much carbon while growing as it releases), but a larger one if it is sent to landfill, where it decomposes anaerobically and releases methane. An artificial tree has no yearly footprint from growing or disposal, but carries a much larger one-time manufacturing and shipping footprint, typically from PVC and metal components produced overseas.

How this calculator works

Using widely-cited estimates of about 3.1 kg CO2e for a landfilled real tree and about 0.75 kg CO2e for a mulched one per year, this tool compares that to an artificial tree’s one-time footprint spread across however many years you plan to reuse it. The break-even point shows how many years of reuse an artificial tree needs before it becomes the lower-footprint choice compared to buying a new real tree every year.

Actual footprints vary by tree size, growing region, transport distance, and specific artificial tree materials. This tool is a general estimate for holiday planning and environmental awareness, not a precise personal audit.
