🏊 Pool Calculator
Estimate your swimming pool’s water volume based on its shape and dimensions.
What this calculator does
The pool calculator estimates the total water volume of a swimming pool, which is useful for planning fill time and calculating chemical dosing quantities.
The formula
Volume is based on surface area multiplied by average depth. For a rectangular pool, surface area is length × width; for a round or oval pool, the calculator uses the ellipse area formula, π × (length/2) × (width/2). Average depth is calculated as the mean of the shallow-end and deep-end depths, which works well for pools with a consistent slope between the two ends. The resulting cubic-foot volume converts to US gallons (1 ft³ ≈ 7.48052 gallons) and liters.
- This average-depth method assumes a fairly even slope; pools with a flat bottom, a hopper (steep) transition, or irregular shapes will vary from this estimate.
- Always verify volume against your pool manufacturer’s specifications before dosing chemicals, since incorrect dosing can be a safety and water-quality issue.
