What a pay gap measures
A pay gap compares the average pay of two groups, commonly used to look at differences between genders, roles, or demographic groups within an organization. This calculator computes the raw (unadjusted) pay gap between any two pay figures you enter.
How the gap is calculated
The gap amount is simply the difference between the two pay figures. The gap is then expressed two ways: as a percentage of the higher pay (the standard way official pay gap statistics are usually reported, showing how much less the lower-paid group earns relative to the higher-paid group) and as a percentage of the lower pay (showing how much more the higher-paid group earns relative to the lower-paid group).
This calculator computes a simple, unadjusted comparison of two numbers you provide. Official gender or demographic pay gap statistics typically use large, representative datasets and may or may not adjust for factors like job role, seniority, or hours worked. This tool is for general educational and planning purposes, not a substitute for formal pay equity analysis.
