Understanding noise exposure limits
Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause permanent hearing damage. Occupational safety agencies define a maximum daily exposure time for a given noise level, based on a reference sound level and an “exchange rate” describing how quickly safe exposure time is cut as noise increases.
The formula
OSHA uses a reference of 90 dB allowed for 8 hours with a 5 dB exchange rate, meaning allowed exposure time halves for every 5 dB increase: Time = 8 / 2^((dB – 90) / 5). NIOSH recommends a stricter 85 dB reference with a 3 dB exchange rate: Time = 8 / 2^((dB – 85) / 3).
