What is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is a widely used formula for estimating basal metabolic rate (BMR), the number of calories your body needs at complete rest to maintain basic functions like breathing and circulation. It was published in 1990 and is generally regarded by dietitians as one of the more accurate general-purpose BMR formulas, replacing the older Harris-Benedict equation in many clinical settings.

The formula

Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age(years) + 5. Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age(years) − 161. The calculator also multiplies your BMR by an activity level factor to give an estimated total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), representing roughly how many calories you burn per day including activity.
