How transposition works

Transposing a note by N semitones shifts its position on the 12-tone chromatic scale by N steps, wrapping around into the next or previous octave whenever the shift crosses a C. This calculator finds the new note name using modular arithmetic on the 12-note scale, then computes its frequency with the equal temperament formula referenced to A4 = 440 Hz.

A positive semitone value transposes up in pitch; a negative value transposes down.
