How Easter’s date is determined
Unlike fixed holidays, Easter Sunday in the Western Christian calendar moves each year because it is defined relative to the moon: it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the March equinox. This can place Easter anywhere between March 22 and April 25.
The method used here
This calculator uses the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm (also called the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm), a well-established mathematical method for computing the date of Easter Sunday in the Gregorian calendar without needing actual astronomical data. It also calculates related dates that are fixed relative to Easter: Ash Wednesday (46 days before), Palm Sunday (7 days before), Good Friday (2 days before), and Pentecost (49 days after).
This calculator applies to the Western (Gregorian) calendar used by Catholic and most Protestant churches. Orthodox Christian churches typically calculate Easter using the Julian calendar, which often results in a different date.
