What is a crude mortality rate
A crude mortality rate measures how many deaths occur in a population over a given time period, without adjusting for factors like age structure. It’s one of the most basic and widely used measures in public health and demography.
How it’s calculated
The rate equals total deaths divided by the person-time at risk (population multiplied by the time period), then scaled up by a round number such as 1,000 or 100,000 so results are easy to read and compare across populations of different sizes.
Note: because this is a crude rate, it doesn’t account for differences in age distribution between populations, which can make comparisons misleading (older populations naturally have higher crude death rates). This calculator is for general educational use.
