Converting volume to weight

Milliliters measure volume and grams measure weight, so converting between them requires knowing the density of what you’re measuring. Water conveniently weighs almost exactly 1 gram per milliliter, but most cooking ingredients — oils, syrups, flours — are lighter or heavier than water.

How this calculator works

Choose the ingredient closest to what you’re measuring, and the calculator multiplies your volume by that ingredient’s typical density (grams per milliliter) to give you the equivalent weight in grams and ounces.

Note: Density values used here are standard reference figures for common ingredients. Temperature, brand, and preparation can cause small real-world variation, so treat results as a helpful estimate rather than a lab-grade measurement.
