This calculator estimates frosting quantity from your cake’s surface area — the top, the sides, and the filling layer between each cake layer — using the commonly cited baking rule of thumb that one cup of buttercream frosting covers roughly 100 square inches for a standard, fully-frosted coat.
Adjusting for coverage style
A thin crumb coat uses less frosting per square inch (about 150 sq in per cup), while heavier decorating with piped borders and details uses more (about 65 sq in per cup). Choose the style closest to what you’re planning, and enter your cake’s dimensions, total height, and number of layers.
