What the Kaya Identity is
The Kaya Identity, developed by economist Yoichi Kaya, expresses total carbon dioxide emissions as the product of four factors: population, GDP per capita (affluence), the energy intensity of the economy (how much energy it takes to produce each dollar of output), and the carbon intensity of that energy (how much CO2 each unit of energy produces).
The formula
CO2 = Population × (GDP / Population) × (Energy / GDP) × (CO2 / Energy). Multiplying these four terms together cancels out the intermediate units, leaving total CO2 emissions. This identity is widely used in climate policy discussions to show that emissions can be reduced by slowing population growth, reducing per-capita wealth (not usually a policy goal), improving energy efficiency, or decarbonizing the energy supply.
