Food Waste Footprint Calculator
Find out the hidden environmental and financial cost of the food your household throws away each week.
What This Calculator Does
This tool estimates the carbon footprint, water footprint, and financial cost of food that gets thrown away instead of eaten. It scales your weekly waste up to an annual figure so you can see the cumulative impact.
How the Estimate Works
Every kilogram of food carries an embedded environmental cost from growing, processing, and transporting it, even if it’s never eaten. The calculator applies average greenhouse gas and water-use factors per kilogram based on general food category (mixed diet, meat and dairy, produce, or grains), figures widely cited in food-sustainability research such as UN Environment Programme and FAO food waste reports. These are population-level averages, not lab-measured values for your specific groceries.
Why It Matters
Roughly a third of food produced globally is never eaten, and food waste is a meaningful contributor to household carbon footprints and unnecessary water use. Small reductions in weekly waste compound significantly over a year.
Note: This calculator is for general educational and planning purposes and uses average emission and water-use factors; actual environmental impact varies by specific food, farming method, and region.
