Understanding mercury in fish

Some fish accumulate methylmercury from the water and their diet, with larger predatory fish generally containing higher concentrations. Health agencies set a reference dose for how much mercury a person can consume regularly without expected adverse effects.

How this calculator works

The U.S. EPA reference dose (RfD) for methylmercury is 0.1 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day. This calculator multiplies your body weight by that reference dose to get a safe daily and weekly mercury intake, then divides that by the mercury contributed by one serving of your chosen fish (mercury concentration times serving weight) to estimate how many servings per week stay within the reference dose.

This tool provides a general educational estimate, not individualized medical or dietary advice. Actual mercury content varies by fish species, source, and testing; pregnant people and young children should follow official health-agency fish consumption guidance.
