What is Basal Energy Expenditure

Basal Energy Expenditure (BEE) is the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic life functions — breathing, circulation, cell production — while completely at rest, before accounting for any physical activity or digestion.

The Harris-Benedict equation

This calculator uses the original Harris-Benedict equations, which estimate BEE from weight, height, age, and sex using separate formulas for men and women. It’s one of the most widely referenced methods for estimating resting energy needs.

Actual metabolic rate varies between individuals due to muscle mass, genetics, and health conditions, so treat this as a general estimate for planning and educational purposes rather than a precise clinical measurement.
