Why cigarette butt cleanups matter

Cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate, a bioplastic that breaks down very slowly in the environment and is one of the most commonly found items in litter and beach cleanups worldwide.

How this calculator works

Enter the number of butts collected at a cleanup, an average weight per butt (typically around 0.2 grams including residual tobacco and paper), and a collection rate per volunteer. The calculator multiplies these to estimate the total waste weight, the portion that is plastic filter material (roughly 95% of a butt’s weight), and how many volunteer-hours the collection likely represented.

These are general planning estimates using typical average values; actual butt weight and collection speed vary by brand and cleanup conditions.
