What this calculator does

The flooring calculator estimates how many boxes of flooring (laminate, vinyl plank, hardwood, or tile) you need to cover a room, including extra for cutting waste.

The formula

Room area in square feet is length multiplied by width. A waste allowance — typically 10%, or more for diagonal layouts or small, irregular rooms — is added to that area to account for cuts, damaged pieces, and pattern matching. The total is then divided by how much area a single box covers, rounded up to the next whole box since partial boxes aren’t sold.

This is a general estimate. Room shape, plank length, and layout direction can all affect actual waste, so it’s wise to confirm quantities with your flooring supplier before purchase.
