🪨 Crushed Stone Calculator
Estimate how many cubic yards and tons of crushed stone or gravel you need to cover an area to a given depth.
What This Calculator Does
This tool estimates how much crushed stone, gravel, or similar aggregate you need to cover a given area at a chosen depth, both in cubic yards (how it’s usually sold) and tons (how it’s usually delivered).
The Formula
First it finds the volume in cubic feet: volume = length × width × (depth in inches / 12), then converts to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Weight is estimated as volume × density, using a typical crushed stone density of around 100 lb per cubic foot (roughly 1.35 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard), though actual density varies by stone type and compaction.
Suppliers often round up to the nearest half or full ton, and it’s common practice to order 5-10% extra to account for settling and an uneven base. Confirm the exact density for your chosen stone type with your supplier for the most accurate order quantity.
