What Is a Dilution Factor?
The dilution factor describes how many times a stock solution’s concentration is reduced when it is diluted to a larger final volume, typically by adding solvent. It is a common calculation in chemistry, biology, and laboratory work whenever a concentrated stock solution needs to be diluted to a usable working concentration.
The Formula
This calculator uses two related equations: dilution factor = final volume ÷ initial volume, and the dilution equation C1V1 = C2V2, rearranged to solve for the final concentration: final concentration = (initial concentration × initial volume) ÷ final volume.
