What This Calculator Does
Dissolving a solute in a solvent raises the solvent’s boiling point — a colligative property called boiling point elevation. This calculator estimates how much higher a solution will boil compared to the pure solvent, based on how concentrated the solution is.
The Formula
Boiling point elevation is calculated as ΔTb = i × Kb × m, where i is the van ‘t Hoff factor (the number of particles the solute breaks into in solution — 1 for non-ionizing molecules like sugar, roughly 2 for a simple salt like NaCl), Kb is the solvent’s molal boiling point elevation constant, and m is the molality (moles of solute per kilogram of solvent), found from m = (mass ÷ molar mass) ÷ kg of solvent.
A Few Notes
- This formula assumes a dilute, ideal solution; very concentrated solutions can deviate from this simple linear relationship.
- For ionic compounds, set the van ‘t Hoff factor to the approximate number of ions produced per formula unit (e.g., 2 for NaCl, 3 for CaCl&sub2;) for a more realistic result.
