What this calculator estimates

Cryptocurrency transactions consume electricity because the underlying networks rely on computing power to validate them. This calculator multiplies the number of transactions you enter by a published average energy-per-transaction figure for the chosen network, then converts that electricity use into an estimated carbon footprint.

How the numbers work

Bitcoin uses a proof-of-work system, where miners compete using large amounts of computing hardware; widely cited estimates put its average energy use at several hundred kilowatt-hours per transaction. Ethereum switched to proof-of-stake in 2022 (“the Merge”), cutting its energy use by more than 99%, so its per-transaction footprint is far smaller. Multiplying total electricity used by your local grid’s carbon intensity (kg CO2 emitted per kWh generated) gives an estimated carbon footprint, which is also shown as an equivalent number of miles driven in an average car.

Note: Per-transaction energy figures for proof-of-work networks are estimates that vary between studies and over time as mining hardware and electricity mixes change. This tool is for general educational purposes, not a precise audit.
