What an ecological footprint is

An ecological footprint estimates how much biologically productive land and sea area (measured in global hectares, or gha) is needed to support a person’s lifestyle and absorb their waste, including carbon emissions. It is a way of comparing consumption to the planet’s biocapacity, roughly 1.6 global hectares available per person.

How this calculator works

This simplified version adds up footprint contributions from your diet, car travel, air travel, and home energy use, using published average carbon-to-land conversion factors, plus a baseline allowance for shared goods and services (infrastructure, public services, and consumption not captured above) that every lifestyle includes. Dividing your total footprint by the global biocapacity per person estimates how many Earths would be needed if everyone lived the same way.

This is a simplified educational estimate, not the full Global Footprint Network methodology, which accounts for many more categories in detail. Use it to compare choices and trends, not as a precise measurement.
