What this calculator estimates
The COVID-19 pandemic drove a sharp rise in single-use protective items: disposable face masks, gloves, rapid antigen test kits, and hand sanitizer bottles. This calculator multiplies how many people you specify, over a chosen time period, by typical daily or weekly usage rates for each item, then converts the total count into an estimated plastic waste mass.
How the math works
Each item type is assigned a typical average weight based on published waste-composition studies from the pandemic period: a surgical-style disposable mask weighs roughly 3-4 grams, a pair of disposable gloves roughly 7 grams, a rapid antigen test kit (including its cassette, swab, buffer tube, and packaging) roughly 15 grams, and a small hand sanitizer bottle roughly 25 grams of plastic. The calculator multiplies your inputs together for each category, sums the results, and reports the total in kilograms and metric tonnes, plus a rough equivalent number of standard trash bags (assuming about 5 kg of light plastic waste per bag).
