What Is a Recycling Rate?
The recycling rate is the percentage of total waste generated that is diverted into recycling streams (such as paper, glass, metal, and plastic) rather than sent to landfill or incineration. It’s a common metric used by households, businesses, and municipalities to track waste management performance.
The Formula
This calculator uses the standard formula: Recycling Rate (%) = (Recycled Weight / Total Waste Weight) × 100. The remainder of the waste stream (total minus recycled) is assumed to go to landfill, incineration, or other disposal.
How to Use the Result
A higher recycling rate generally indicates more material is being kept out of landfills and reused in manufacturing new products. Many national and regional recycling rate benchmarks (often 30-50% for residential waste) can be compared against your own number to see how your practices measure up.
