What this calculator does

This tool compares commuting the same round-trip distance by car versus by bicycle, showing the CO2 emissions avoided, the fuel cost you’d save, and roughly how many calories you’d burn by cycling instead of driving, based on your weekly commuting schedule.

How the estimate is calculated

The calculator uses a commonly cited average tailpipe emission factor of about 0.192 kg CO2e per kilometer for a typical passenger car, while cycling produces no direct tailpipe emissions, so the full car-based CO2 total for your annual mileage is counted as “saved” by switching to a bike. Fuel cost is calculated from your car’s stated efficiency (liters per 100 km) multiplied by your annual driving distance and your local fuel price. Calories burned use a general estimate of about 30 kcal per kilometer of moderate-pace cycling, which varies with speed, terrain, and rider weight.

Annual distance is built up from your one-way trip distance, doubled for a round trip, multiplied by your commuting days per week, and scaled to 52 weeks.
