What This Calculator Does

This calculator finds how much of your stock cell suspension to combine with diluent (media or buffer) to reach a target cell concentration in a target final volume.

The Formula

It uses the standard dilution equation C1V1 = C2V2, where C1 is your stock concentration, V1 is the unknown volume of stock to use, C2 is the desired concentration, and V2 is the desired final volume. Solving for V1 gives V1 = (C2 ร— V2) / C1, and the remaining volume (V2 โˆ’ V1) is the amount of diluent to add.

  • Enter your stock concentration and desired concentration in the same units (cells/mL).
  • Enter the total final volume you want to prepare.

This is a general lab planning tool for educational purposes. Always verify your actual cell counts with a hemocytometer or automated counter before use in an experiment.
