Llama Calculator

Estimate how much hay or feed a llama needs each day based on its body weight and activity level.

What this calculator estimates

Llamas are camelids that typically need to eat between 1.5% and 2.5% of their body weight in dry matter feed (mainly grass hay or pasture) each day, depending on their activity level and life stage. This calculator applies that standard camelid nutrition guideline to your llama’s body weight to estimate daily feed requirements.

How the estimate is calculated

An idle adult llama at maintenance typically needs around 1.5% of its body weight in feed per day. Working or breeding males run closer to 2%, while growing, pregnant, or lactating llamas need more energy and protein, roughly 2.5% of body weight. The calculator multiplies your llama’s weight by the percentage for the selected activity level to get a daily feed estimate, then projects weekly and monthly totals, plus an approximate daily water intake (llamas typically drink around 1-2% of body weight in water daily, more in hot weather).

These figures are general guidelines for grass hay-based diets and can vary with hay quality, climate, and individual animal condition. Always adjust based on body condition scoring and consult an experienced camelid veterinarian or extension resource for a specific animal’s nutrition plan; this tool is for general educational and planning purposes only.
