How milk needs change with age

A baby’s daily milk (breast milk or formula) needs relative to body weight are highest in the first months and gradually decrease once solid foods are introduced, typically around 6 months, since solids begin supplying some daily calories.

The guidelines used

For babies under 6 months, this calculator uses the common guideline of about 150ml per kilogram of body weight per day. From 6-11 months, once solids are established, typical combined milk intake is often cited around 750ml/day. From 12 months, whole milk intake commonly settles around 480-720ml/day regardless of weight, as most calories now come from food.

  • Under 6 months: ~150ml/kg/day
  • 6-11 months: ~750ml/day (with solids)
  • 12+ months: ~500ml/day (with a full diet of solids)

This tool is a general educational estimate only, and every baby’s appetite and growth differ. Always follow your pediatrician’s individualized feeding guidance, especially around introducing solids or if you have feeding or growth concerns.
