What This Calculator Does
This calculator estimates how many grams of food to feed your dog each day, based on its weight, activity level or life stage, and the calorie density of the food you feed.
The Formula
It first calculates Resting Energy Requirement (RER) = 70 Ã (weight in kg)0.75, a standard veterinary nutrition formula for the calories a dog burns at rest. This is then multiplied by an activity/life-stage factor to get the Daily Energy Requirement (DER), and finally divided by the food’s calorie density to get a daily food amount in grams.
- Check your dog food’s label or manufacturer information for its calorie density in kcal/kg (often listed as kcal/cup or kcal/kg on the bag).
- Activity factors are general multipliers commonly used in veterinary nutrition guidelines.
This is a general starting estimate for planning purposes, not veterinary advice. Individual dogs vary, so monitor your dog’s body condition and adjust portions over time, and consult your veterinarian for a tailored feeding plan.
