What this calculator does
A chord is built by stacking specific intervals above a root note. This calculator shows exactly which notes make up any common chord type, starting from a root note you choose.
How the calculation works
Each chord type has a fixed pattern of semitone intervals above the root — for example, a major chord is root, +4 semitones, +7 semitones, while a minor chord uses root, +3, +7. The calculator applies that pattern to your chosen root note, wrapping around the 12-note chromatic scale, to list the resulting notes.
These interval patterns are standard music theory used across instruments and genres, from guitar and piano chord charts to formal harmony analysis.
