The Film Calculator converts a length of motion picture film into running time, based on the film format and projection frame rate. It is a standard reference tool used by film editors, archivists, and projectionists.
How the calculation works
Each film format has a fixed number of frames per foot: 35mm 4-perf film has 16 frames per foot, 35mm 3-perf has 21.33, 16mm has 40, and Super 8 has 72. Total frames equal footage multiplied by frames per foot, and running time in seconds equals total frames divided by the frame rate (commonly 24 frames per second). For example, 90 feet of standard 35mm film at 24fps runs for exactly one minute.
