How many breaths do you take?

A healthy resting adult typically breathes between 12 and 20 times per minute, a figure known as the respiratory rate. This simple calculator scales that rate up to show how many breaths add up over an hour, a day, a year, and across a lifetime so far.

How this calculator works

The math is straightforward multiplication: breaths per minute multiplied by 60 gives breaths per hour, multiplied again by 24 gives breaths per day, and multiplied by 365.25 (accounting for leap years) gives breaths per year. Multiplying the yearly figure by your current age gives a rough estimate of total breaths taken so far, assuming a fairly constant average rate throughout life.

Actual breathing rate varies with activity level, sleep, emotional state, altitude, and age, so real lifetime totals differ from this simplified constant-rate estimate.

This calculator is for general educational and curiosity purposes. A resting respiratory rate that is consistently outside the normal 12-20 breaths per minute range should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
