What Is Biomagnification?

Biomagnification is the process by which the concentration of a persistent pollutant (such as mercury or certain pesticides) increases at each successive level of a food chain, because predators accumulate the contaminant carried by all the prey they consume over their lifetime. Top predators, including large fish and birds of prey, often carry the highest body burdens.

The Formula

This calculator uses the standard exponential biomagnification model: C_n = C_0 × BMF^n, where C_0 is the pollutant concentration in the base of the food chain (a producer, such as algae or plankton), BMF is the biomagnification factor observed between each trophic level, and n is the number of trophic levels being climbed.

How to Use the Result

The result shows the estimated concentration at the top of the food chain you specified. Real biomagnification factors vary widely by pollutant, ecosystem, and species and are typically determined through field sampling rather than a single fixed number, so treat this as a simplified educational illustration of the concept rather than a precise environmental measurement.
