Crank horsepower is measured right at the engine, before power passes through the transmission, differential, axles, and other drivetrain components. Wheel horsepower is what’s actually measured at the wheels on a dyno, after those mechanical losses.
How this calculator works
Enter your engine’s rated crank horsepower and select your drivetrain type. The calculator applies a typical efficiency percentage for that drivetrain (roughly 85% for RWD, 90% for FWD, and 78% for AWD, reflecting the extra components AWD systems use) to estimate wheel horsepower and total drivetrain loss.
These are commonly used industry rule-of-thumb percentages; actual drivetrain loss varies by specific vehicle, transmission type, and mechanical condition, so a real dyno test is the only way to get an exact figure.
