What a variable annuity calculator shows

A variable annuity is an insurance-based investment product whose value fluctuates with the performance of its underlying sub-accounts (similar to mutual funds), minus ongoing fees such as mortality and expense (M&E) charges and fund expenses. This calculator estimates the accumulated value during the accumulation phase, before any payout begins.

How the estimate is calculated

Each year, the calculator applies your expected gross annual return to the balance, subtracts the estimated annual fee charged on that balance, and adds any additional contribution you make that year. Repeating this for your chosen number of years produces an estimated accumulated value along with total fees paid and net growth.

  • Variable annuities carry fees, surrender charges, and investment risk that vary significantly by contract and insurer.
  • This calculator assumes a constant average annual return, which does not reflect real market volatility.
