What this calculator does
This calculator gives a rough scientific estimate of how many leaves a tree has, based on the size of its canopy, how densely leaves are packed (leaf area index), and the average size of an individual leaf for that species.
How the math works
Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a real ecological measurement equal to total leaf surface area divided by the ground area the canopy covers; typical deciduous trees have an LAI between about 2 and 6. The calculator finds the canopy’s ground area from its diameter (treating it as a circle), multiplies by the LAI to get total leaf surface area, then divides by the average area of one leaf to estimate leaf count.
Because canopy shape, leaf overlap, and species vary enormously, this is a Fermi-style estimate rather than an exact count, useful for education and general curiosity rather than scientific research.
