ERA Calculator – Earned Run Average
Calculate a pitcher’s Earned Run Average (ERA) from earned runs allowed and innings pitched.
What is ERA?
Earned Run Average (ERA) is one of the most common statistics used to evaluate a pitcher’s effectiveness. It measures how many earned runs a pitcher allows, on average, per standard game (9 innings in baseball, often 7 in softball or some youth leagues).
How ERA is calculated
The formula is: ERA = (Earned Runs Allowed ÷ Innings Pitched) × Innings in a Full Game. Innings pitched is derived from outs recorded, since each inning is 3 outs — for example, 7 innings and 1 out is entered as 22 outs (7 × 3 + 1).
A lower ERA indicates better pitching performance, since it means fewer earned runs are being allowed. Unearned runs (caused by errors) are not counted in this statistic.
